The picture shows how to identify maximum (largest), minimum (smallest), second-largest, second-smallest, third-largest and third-smallest, etc., for the list of numbers in range A1:A10.

In cell D1 the formula to return the maximum (largest) number is
=MAX(A1:A10)

In cell D2, the formula to return the minimum (smallest) number is
=MIN(A1:A10)

In cell D4, the formula to return the second-largest number is
=LARGE(A1:A10,2)

In cell D5, the formula to return the second-smallest number is
=SMALL(A1:A10,2)

In cell D6, the formula to return the third-largest number is
=LARGE(A1:A10,3)
