Tom’s Tutorials For Excel: AutoFilling Dates For Weekdays Only

Here’s how you can fill in a range of dates that only includes traditional workdays of Monday through Friday, while bypassing the weekend dates for Saturdays and Sundays.

Step 1
You start by entering your beginning date into a cell. For example, as shown in the following picture, the date of October 1, 2012 was entered into cell A5. An optional but useful tactic is to right-click that cell, left-click to select Format Cells, and enter a custom format to help identify the weekdays for the dates you’ll be filling.



Step 2
In this example, I formatted the date in cell A5 as dddd, mmm d, yyyy.


Step 3
For your beginning cell (A5 in this example), drag down its fill handle (that tiny square at the bottom right corner of the cell selection indicator) while pressing the right mouse button. When you’ve dragged down the fill handle to your last desired row, release the right mouse button. A popup menu will appear. Left-click to select Fill Weekdays.



And that’s it! Here is the result, with only weekday dates filled in.
