Tom’s Tutorials For Excel: Blinking Cells and Flashing Objects

Free and safe downloadable workbook with blink examples

With VBA, you can make cells or their contents look as if they are blinking or flashing. This is not a popular tactic because, although amusing at first, the blinking quickly becomes annoying. But, it can add a fun or useful visual effect in some situations.

In the downloadable workbook, one example shows how to make a cell’s background & font color to blink between red and white, controlled by the user by clicking a start and stop button.

Another example flickers a lightbulb, bring the screen from black to light.

You can apply the code in that workbook to other situations, such as Change or Calculation events to trigger the blinking action for cells containing below-expected budget numbers.

Usually, it is best to have the user be in control of when they want the blinking to start and stop.

Is there code that will blink cell on/off of selected cell?

Totally possible. If you download the workbook that is linked to this blog post, you can use a Selection Change event on your worksheet to modify the code for that purpose. If you tried to do that and it did not work the way you want, post back with what you tried and what is not working right.
